  • Systems Physiology (01:146:356 or 11:067:300, 3 or 4 credits)

Clinical Practicum (32 credits)

This intense year-long full-time (40 hrs/week, 50 weeks) internship is done at one of three affiliated hospitals. Students are at the hospital all day Monday-Friday, and occasionally weekend work is expected. Maintaining a part-time job outside of the clinical training is strongly discouraged by most programs. Acceptance is competitive and based upon academic record, letters of recommendation, related experiences and an interview. Applications are obtained from the hospitals and submitted one year prior to the starting date. Academic credits are granted for the practicum, and regular university tuition is paid during this time. All major requirements (categories 1-3 above), college requirements, and 90 credits must be completed prior to the start of the internship.

Applications for the Clinical Practicum can be found on this page.

The following courses are usually included in the 12-month program:

  • Clinical Laboratory Techniques and Instrumentation
  • Clinical Immunohematology
  • Clinical Immunology
  • Clinical Biochemistry
  • Clinical Microbiology
  • Hematology
  • Urinalysis and Clinical Microscopy

Some Important Points to Consider

  • Do not take a course before you are ready, and be aware that some courses serve as pre-requisites for another. For instance, students must complete General Chemistry before taking Organic Chemistry. Consult the RU course catalog for any questions regarding prerequisites (http://catalogs.rutgers.edu/current.shtml).
  • A minimum of 10 credits of coursework in the Biological Sciences (section 4, above) must be completed in residence. In other words, no more than 12 credits in this part of the major requirements may be transferred from any institution outside of Rutgers-New Brunswick.
  • Satisfactory completion of a course means a grade of “C” or better.
  • Do not overload your schedule with too many science courses your first semester at Rutgers. Remember that entry into the clinical program is competitive. A GPA of at least 2.5 is required.
  • Consult with your academic advisor; a ten minute consultation can prevent misunderstandings that have to be rectified later!
  • You can easily follow your progress towards the completion of the B.S. in Medical Technology by printing and using our Medical Technology Major Worksheet.
